RAS Prelims 2026 — World Geography

Natural Vegetation

Climate–Vegetation Relationship • Adaptations • Global Distribution

Natural vegetation should not be studied merely as "types of forests". For RPSC, it is essential to understand together: Climate → Temperature → Rainfall → Vegetation Type → Major Regions → Major Trees → Adaptations → Economic Importance → Associated Fauna → Map-based Facts → Statement-based Questions.

1. Natural Vegetation — Basic Concept

Natural vegetation refers to vegetation that develops spontaneously in the natural conditions of an area without direct human intervention.

The main factors influencing its distribution are—

  1. Temperature
  2. Rainfall
  3. Seasonal distribution of rainfall
  4. Soil
  5. Relief
  6. Altitude
  7. Latitude
  8. Water availability
  9. Distance from the sea
  10. Slope and drainage
Most Important Relationship

Climate is the most dominant controlling force in the distribution of natural vegetation. But only the amount of annual rainfall is not sufficient. When the rain occurs, how long it lasts, and how long the dry period is, also change the nature of vegetation.

2. Major Global Types of Natural Vegetation

No.Natural VegetationMajor Climate Region
1Tropical RainforestEquatorial/Extremely Humid
2Tropical Monsoon ForestMonsoon Region
3Savanna GrasslandTropical Humid-Dry
4Tropical Thorn and Scrub VegetationSemi-Arid Tropical Region
5Mediterranean VegetationMediterranean Climate
6Temperate GrasslandContinental/Temperate Region
7Temperate Deciduous ForestTemperate Humid Region
8Coniferous ForestCold Temperate/Subpolar
9Tundra VegetationPolar Margin Region
10Mountain VegetationVaries with Altitude

3. Tropical Rainforest

Main Features: High temperature throughout the year, very high rainfall, high humidity, dry season very short or almost absent, forests extremely dense, tree height can be very high, vertical stratification clearly visible.

Major Global Regions:

  1. Amazon Basin — South America (Brazil, Peru, Colombia etc.). It is broadly also called Selvas.
  2. Congo Basin — Central Africa
  3. South-East Asia — especially Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Papua region etc.

4. Amazon Rainforest — RPSC Facts

The forest of the Amazon region is one of the world's largest tropical rainforest systems.

  • A large part of the Amazon Basin is in Brazil.
  • Extremely high biodiversity is found here.
  • Evergreen vegetation is dominant.
  • Rainfall level is extremely high.
  • Vegetation is extremely dense.
  • The canopy of many trees is multi-layered.

Question Angle: Amazon → Tropical Rainforest → High temperature + High rainfall + Evergreen vegetation

5. Vegetation Structure of Tropical Rainforest

In these forests, vegetation can be understood in vertical layers—

  1. Emergent Layer: Very tall trees
  2. Canopy Layer: Extensive cover of dense leaves
  3. Understory: Trees and vegetation of lower height
  4. Forest Floor: Limited low vegetation due to less light

5.1 Lianas and Epiphytes

In tropical rainforests— lianas, climbing plants, epiphytes (plants growing on other plants) are very common.

Exam Trap

An epiphyte grows on its host plant, but it is not necessary that it obtains nutrients directly from it. Therefore, it is wrong to consider an epiphyte as a parasite.

6. Tropical Monsoon Forest

These develop in areas where— temperature remains high, rainfall is adequate, but rainfall is not uniform throughout the year, there is a clear dry period.

Therefore, compared to rainforests, in these forests some trees shed their leaves during the dry season. These are generally also called tropical deciduous forests.

7. Deciduous Forest — Main Adaptation

Why do leaves fall? To avoid water shortage during the dry season, trees— shed their leaves to reduce transpiration. This is an important adaptation.

Major Trees: Teak, Sal, Shisham, Sandalwood etc. may be included. The actual structure of trees changes according to regional rainfall, soil, and local conditions.

8. Savanna Grassland

Savanna is the major grassland of tropical regions.

Main Features: Tall grass, scattered trees in between, clear wet and dry seasons, rainfall less than rainforests, fire can be an important element of natural ecology.

Major Regions: Africa (the most famous and extensive region of savanna) — especially East Africa, Kenya, Tanzania etc.; South America — savanna grasslands in some regions; Australia — savanna region in tropical northern parts.

9. Savanna and Wildlife

The African savanna is especially famous for large herbivores and carnivores.

Major Animals: Zebra, Giraffe, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhinoceros, Lion, Cheetah, Hyena.

Important Relationship for Exams: Savanna → Africa → Grassland → Large herbivores → Carnivores

10. Tropical Thorn and Scrub Vegetation

Where rainfall is low and the dry period is long, dense forests cannot develop. In such areas— thorny bushes, small shrubs, sparse trees, deep-rooted plants are dominant.

Plant Adaptations:

  1. Small leaves
  2. Thorns
  3. Thick/waxy leaves
  4. Deep roots
  5. Water conservation
  6. Low transpiration

11. Desert Vegetation

In extremely arid areas, vegetation is sparse. Such plants are broadly called xerophytic vegetation.

AdaptationPurpose
ThornsProtection from herbivores + reducing leaf area
Small leavesReducing water loss
Thick stemWater storage
Deep rootsObtaining groundwater
Extensive root systemQuickly obtaining water from short rainfall
Waxy surfaceReducing evaporation

12. Important Concept — Water Adaptation Categories of Plants

  1. Hydrophytes: Plants growing in water or extremely water-rich places.
  2. Mesophytes: Plants of environments with moderate water availability.
  3. Xerophytes: Plants adapted to dry environments.
RPSC Trap

Xerophyte = drought-adapted plant. Calling them only "desert plants" is a very narrow definition, because xerophytes can also be found in other areas of dry environment.

13. Mediterranean Vegetation

The main feature of the Mediterranean climate is— hot and dry summer + mild and humid winter. Corresponding to this climate, typical hard-leaved vegetation develops. It is generally called Sclerophyllous vegetation.

13.1 Major Regions

Around the Mediterranean Sea. In addition, areas with similar climate: Central Chile, California, South-Western Australia, Cape region of South Africa.

Most Important Formula

Five major global regions of Mediterranean climate: Mediterranean Sea + California + Central Chile + Cape + South-Western Australia.

14. Adaptations of Mediterranean Vegetation

Due to hot and dry summers, plants have— small/hard leaves, thick leaf cuticle, evergreen nature, deep roots, capacity for water conservation.

Economic Importance: In Mediterranean regions— olives, grapes, citrus fruits are important crops.

Note

All of these are not "natural vegetation"; many are agricultural crops grown by humans. In exams, the climate region and its associated agriculture should be kept separate from natural vegetation.

15. Temperate Deciduous Forest

In these forests— moderate temperature, adequate rainfall, clear change of seasons are found.

Main Feature: Trees shed their leaves in a particular season of the year. Therefore, these are called deciduous forests.

Major Regions: Some parts of Western and Central Europe, Eastern North America, East Asia.

16. Temperate Grassland

In temperate regions where there is not enough moisture for trees, grasslands develop.

RegionGrassland
North AmericaPrairies
South AmericaPampas
EurasiaSteppes

This table is extremely important.

17. Grasslands — RPSC's Permanent Question Area

  • Prairies → North America — especially Canada, United States
  • Pampas → South America — especially Argentina, Uruguay
  • Steppes → Eurasia — especially Russia, Kazakhstan etc.
  • Veld → South Africa
  • Downs → Australia

18. Another Important Feature of Grasslands

In temperate grasslands, the main form of natural vegetation is grass. In many places in these regions— due to fertile soil, extensive level land, and favourable temperature, large-scale commercial agriculture developed.

Exam Trap

Prairies = not only America. It is broadly the temperate grassland of North America, in which an important part of Canada is also included.

19. Coniferous Forest

In cold regions, coniferous trees are extremely important.

Major Trees: Pine, Deodar, Spruce, Fir, Larch.

Main Features: Cone-like shape, needle-like leaves, adaptation to cold, evergreen nature in many species.

20. Taiga

Taiga generally refers to the vast coniferous forest region of the Northern Hemisphere.

Major Regions: Canada, Alaska, Russia/Siberia, some parts of Northern Europe.

From a global perspective, taiga is especially extensive in the high latitudes of North America and Eurasia.

21. Why Needle-like Leaves in Coniferous Trees?

This is an important conceptual question. Needle-like leaves—

  • Reduce the surface area of the leaf.
  • Help reduce water loss.
  • Provide adaptation in cold and snowy environments.

The conical shape of the trees also helps the snow to slide down.

22. Tundra Vegetation

Vegetation in polar regions is extremely limited.

Major Vegetation: Mosses, Lichens, small shrubs, short-height grass/vegetation.

Major Regions: Northern Canada, Northern parts of Alaska, Coastal parts of Greenland, Northern Siberia, Northern Scandinavia.

23. Why No Large Trees in Tundra?

Main Reasons:

  1. Extremely low temperature
  2. Very short growing season
  3. Permanently frozen layer beneath the ground — Permafrost
  4. Limited nutrients
  5. Unfavourable conditions for root development

Permafrost: Permafrost = such land/soil that remains in a frozen state continuously for at least a long period.

Exam Trap

Vegetation is not completely absent in Tundra. Mainly mosses, lichens, and small shrubs are found here.

24. Mountain Natural Vegetation

In mountainous regions, the distribution of vegetation depends not only on latitude but also on altitude. As altitude increases— temperature decreases → the type of vegetation changes. This is called Altitudinal Zonation.

25. General Sequence of Altitude-Based Vegetation

In mountains of tropical regions, generally—

  • Lower part → Tropical forest
  • Middle altitude → Temperate forest
  • Higher altitude → Coniferous forest
  • Above tree line → Alpine grass and shrubs
  • Snow region → Vegetation extremely limited/absent

28. Important Terms at a Glance

  • Selvas → Name used for the dense tropical rainforest of the Amazon
  • Savanna → Tropical grassland, in which scattered trees may be found
  • Prairies → Temperate grassland of North America
  • Pampas → Temperate grassland of South America
  • Steppes → Eurasian grassland
  • Veld → South African grassland
  • Downs → Australian grassland
  • Taiga → High-latitude coniferous forest region
  • Tundra → Tree-less/almost tree-less cold region, where mosses-lichens etc. are dominant
  • Xerophyte → Drought-adapted plant
  • Hydrophyte → Plants of aquatic/extremely water-rich conditions
  • Mesophyte → Plants of environments with moderate water availability
  • Epiphyte → Plants growing by taking shelter on
  • Parasite → An organism that obtains nutrients directly from another living organism (host)
  • Permafrost → Land/soil that remains frozen for a long period

  • Altitudinal Zonation → Change in vegetation type with increasing altitude
  • Shade-tolerant → Plants capable of growing in low-light conditions on the forest floor
  • Fire-adapted → Plants/ecosystems adapted to periodic natural fires

29. RPSC Fact Traps (Important)

Trap 1: Amazon = world's largest rainforest region is generally acceptable, but the wording "world's largest forest" and "largest tropical rainforest" should be read carefully in the question.

Trap 2: Taiga = not Tundra. Taiga has vast coniferous forests, while in Tundra tree growth is extremely limited.

Trap 3: Savanna = not completely tree-less grassland. Savanna can have scattered trees and shrubs along with grass.

Trap 4: Prairies = North America; Pampas = South America; Steppes = Eurasia.

Trap 5: Mediterranean vegetation is not related only to the Mediterranean Sea. California, Central Chile, Cape region, and South-Western Australia are also examples of similar climate and vegetation regions.

30. Super Revision Formula

If rainfall increases, the general sequence is:

Desert → Thorn/Scrub → Grassland → Deciduous Forest → Evergreen Rainforest

This is not a rigid sequence applicable everywhere, but it is useful for understanding the relationship between water availability and vegetation density.

With decreasing temperature along altitude/latitude:

Tropical Forest → Temperate Forest → Coniferous Forest → Tundra

Part-1: Natural Vegetation of Africa

The distribution of natural vegetation in Africa changes mainly with latitudinal and climatic variation from the equator towards north and south.

A general north-south sequence:

Equatorial Rainforest → Savanna → Tropical Thorn/Semi-Arid Vegetation → Desert Vegetation

And towards the south, approximately the same sequence may be seen in reverse form.

1. Equatorial Rainforest of the Congo Basin

The Congo Basin is the major rainforest region of Central Africa.

Major Regions: Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Cameroon etc.

Main Features: Hot and humid conditions throughout the year, high rainfall, dense evergreen forest, extremely high biodiversity, multi-layered forest structure.

RPSC Link: Congo Basin → Equatorial climate → Dense evergreen rainforest.

2. African Savanna

Savanna is among Africa's most famous natural grassland systems. It also appears as a transition zone between rainforests and drier regions.

Major Regions: East Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, some areas of Uganda, some parts of Southern Africa.

Vegetation: Tall grass, trees like Acacia, distinctive trees like Baobab, shrubs.

3. Acacia — Important Tree of Dry Savanna

Several species of Acacia are found in the African savanna and dry regions.

Adaptations: Small leaves, thorns, deep roots, capacity to tolerate water scarcity.

Exam Angle: Thorny tree + Savanna + Dry season → Adaptations related to water conservation.

4. Baobab

Baobab is an extremely famous tree of the African natural landscape. Its thick trunk exhibits adaptation related to water storage.

Major Regions: Especially the hot and dry/semi-arid parts of Africa. In addition, some species of Baobab are found outside Africa as well.

Trap

It is wrong to consider Baobab as only a pure desert plant. It is mainly a tree associated with hot, seasonal, and dry conditions.

5. Major Grasslands of Africa

In African grasslands, the structure of vegetation changes according to the amount of rainfall and seasonal cycle.

  • More humid areas → Tall grass + More trees
  • Drier areas → Short grass + Sparse trees + Shrubs
  • Extremely dry areas → Thorn/Scrub vegetation

6. Vegetation of the Sahara Desert

The Sahara is one of the world's largest hot desert regions. Natural vegetation here is extremely sparse.

Major Types: Desert shrubs, thorny plants, ephemeral grass, oasis vegetation.

6.1 Oasis

In the desert, where sufficient water is available from groundwater or other sources, relatively dense vegetation can develop. Common oasis vegetation: Date palm is especially important.

Exam Trap

Desert = Not zero vegetation. Rather, sparse and water-adapted vegetation is present.

7. Sahel Region South of the Sahara

The Sahel is a transition belt between the Sahara Desert and the more humid savanna regions. This region is extremely important in understanding the sequence— Sahara → Sahel → Savanna.

Vegetation: Grass, shrubs, sparse trees.

Environmental Problem: This region is sensitive to drought and desertification.

8. Southern Africa — Veld

Veld is the major temperate/subtropical grassland of Southern Africa.

Especially: South Africa, Lesotho, surrounding areas.

Feature: Important from the perspective of large grassland areas and animal husbandry and agriculture.

9. Mediterranean African Vegetation

Climate: Hot and dry summer + Mild and humid winter.

Vegetation: Evergreen hard-leaved plants, shrubs, agricultural areas related to olives etc.

Part-2: Natural Vegetation of Asia

Asia is an extremely vast continent, therefore great diversity is found in natural vegetation here. In the same continent, the sequence from Equatorial Rainforest → Monsoon Forest → Grassland → Desert Vegetation → Temperate Forest → Taiga → Tundra can be seen.

10. Tropical Forests of South and Southeast Asia

In areas of very high rainfall in Southeast Asia, dense tropical forests are found.

Examples: Meranti, Dipterocarp species, Bamboo etc.

Important

Southeast Asia comes under the world's major tropical biodiversity hotspot regions.

12. Monsoon Forest — South Asia

Due to the seasonal nature of the year in India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and other monsoon regions of South Asia, deciduous forests are important.

Main Adaptation: Dry season → Shedding of leaves → Reducing transpiration.

13. Teak

Teak is an important tree of tropical deciduous forests.

Main Features: Valuable hardwood, association with monsoon regions, can shed leaves during dry season.

RPSC Trap

Teak = Always calling it a tropical evergreen forest is wrong. Its main association is with tropical deciduous/monsoon forests.

14. Sal

Sal is also a major tree of tropical deciduous forests of South Asia. In India, its major forest areas are found especially in— the Terai of the Himalayas, Central and Eastern India.

15. Grasslands of Asia

Due to various climatic conditions in Asia, many types of grasslands are found. Especially in Central Asia— Steppes are very important.

16. Steppes

Steppes = Vast temperate grassland of Eurasia.

Major Regions: Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, other parts of Central Asia.

Natural Conditions: Relatively low rainfall, more grass compared to trees, continental climate.

17. Desert Vegetation of Central Asia

The major deserts in Central Asia are— Gobi, Taklamakan, Karakum, Kyzylkum. In these regions, due to aridity— sparse shrubs, thorny vegetation, grass, drought-adapted plants are found.

18. Gobi Desert — Vegetation Relation

The Gobi is not only a completely sandy desert. It is a vast cold desert/semi-arid region, in which— rocky areas, gravelly plains, sparse grass, shrubs are also found.

Exam Trap

Desert = Not only a sandy area. The basic identity of a desert is extremely low rainfall; its surface may be of sand, gravel, rock, or other types.

19. Taiga of Siberia

Vast coniferous forests are found in the Siberian region of Russia. These are broadly called Taiga.

Major Trees: Larch, Spruce, Fir, Pine.

Feature: The structure of trees develops in adaptation to extreme cold and a short growing season.

20. Larch in Siberia — Important Exception

Among coniferous trees, most famous Taiga trees are evergreen, but— Larch is an important exception.

It is deciduous even though it is coniferous, and sheds its needle-like leaves according to the season.

RPSC Trap

"All coniferous trees are evergreen." — Not completely true. Larch is the major example.

21. Tundra Region of Asia

Tundra vegetation is found at high latitudes in Northern Siberia.

Major Vegetation: Mosses, Lichens, Small shrubs, Short-height vegetation.

Tree Limit: Due to extreme cold and permafrost, the growth of large trees is limited here.

22. Mountainous Asia

In the Himalayas, Tibetan Plateau, and other high mountainous regions, vegetation changes with altitude.

General Sequence:

  • Lower warm region → Deciduous/Subtropical forest

27. Memory Formulas

Grasslands: Prairies → America; Pampas → Argentina; Steppes → Eurasia; Veld → South Africa; Downs → Australia.

Forests: Amazon → Rainforest; Congo → Rainforest; Siberia → Taiga; Polar margin → Tundra.

Vegetation Adaptations: Low water → Small leaves + Thorns + Deep roots + Water conservation; Cold → Needle-like leaves + Conical shape; Dry season → Shedding of leaves.

A.29 — Natural Vegetation | Climate–Vegetation Relationship, Adaptations and Global Distribution

1. Major Factors Controlling Natural Vegetation

1. Temperature: Temperature affects plant growth, photosynthesis, seed germination, and transpiration. Generally— High temperature + Adequate moisture → Dense vegetation; Low temperature → Short growing season → Less height and diversity of vegetation.

2. Rainfall: Rainfall is the major determinant of the distribution of natural vegetation. Broadly— High rainfall → Dense forests; Moderate rainfall → Deciduous forest/Grassland; Low rainfall → Thorny shrubs; Very low rainfall → Desert vegetation. But not only total rainfall, but also the seasonal distribution of rainfall is extremely important.

3. Effect of Seasonality of Rainfall: Two regions may have the same annual rainfall, but if— in one, rainfall occurs throughout the year; in the other, rainfall is concentrated in a few months; then the natural vegetation of the two regions can be different. Therefore, the formula for RPSC: Total rainfall + Distribution of rainfall + Dry period = Nature of vegetation.

4. Soil: Soil affects the development of vegetation. Important properties: Depth of soil, Water retention capacity, Fertility, Drainage, Organic matter, pH, Mineral availability.

Exam Trap

In the same climate, due to differences in soil, there can also be differences in vegetation.

5. Altitude: As altitude increases, temperature generally decreases. Therefore, the sequence of vegetation changes in mountainous regions. General sequence: Tropical Forest → Temperate Forest → Coniferous Forest → Alpine grass/shrubs → Snow region.

6. Latitude: Moving from the equator towards the poles, there is a general decrease in energy received from the sun and temperature. Due to this, the broad regions of natural vegetation change. Broad sequence: Equatorial Rainforest → Tropical Forest/Savanna → Desert and Mediterranean Region → Temperate Forest/Grassland → Coniferous Forest → Tundra.

7. Vertical Stratification of Vegetation: Especially in tropical rainforests, vegetation appears in several layers: Emergent layer, Main canopy layer, Understory, Shrub layer, Forest floor.

8. Light and Rainforest

In dense rainforests, the upper canopy blocks a great deal of sunlight. Due to this, the light reaching the forest floor can be limited. Result: Many plants of the forest floor are— Shade-tolerant.

9. Lianas

In tropical rainforests, long woody vines are found, which are generally called lianas. These climb upward by taking support of trees and can reach the upper canopy to obtain light.

Exam Angle: Dense rainforest → Competition for light → Climbing/liana vegetation.

10. Epiphytes

Epiphytes are plants that grow on other plants, especially trees, but generally do not obtain food directly from them.

Examples: Some orchids, Some ferns, Some bromeliads.

Epiphyte ≠ Parasite. This difference is important. A parasite can obtain resources from its host plant, whereas an epiphyte mainly uses only space/shelter.

11. Evergreen and Deciduous Forests

Evergreen Forest: Such forests in which all trees do not shed all their leaves at the same time; in different trees, the renewal of leaves keeps happening at different times. Result: The forest may appear green throughout the year.

Deciduous Forest: In these, during the dry or unfavourable season, a large number of trees shed their leaves. Purpose: To reduce water loss.

12. Evergreen Rainforest vs Deciduous Forest

BasisEvergreen RainforestDeciduous Forest
RainfallVery highModerate/Seasonal
Dry periodVery shortClear
TreesDenseRelatively open
LeavesChange at different timesFall in unfavourable season
LightLess reaching forest floorRelatively more
BiodiversityExtremely highGenerally less

13. Xerophytic Adaptations

In dry regions, plants have to conserve water. Therefore, in many plants— Small leaves reduce transpiration; Thorns can reduce leaf area and provide protection; Thick cuticle reduces water loss; Deep roots can obtain water from depth; Extensive surface roots can quickly absorb water from short rainfall.

14. Special Adaptations of Cactus

Cactus is a famous example of adaptation to dry environments. In it— Leaves are modified into thorns; Green stem performs photosynthesis; Water is stored in the stem; Thick outer surface — such adaptations are found.

Trap: The normal leaves of cactus are modified into thorns for water conservation; the stem plays an important role in photosynthesis.

15. Coniferous Forest — Adaptation to Cold

In coniferous trees, generally— Needle-like leaves, Thick outer surface, Conical shape — such characteristics are found. The conical shape can help prevent snow from accumulating on branches for too long.

16. Tundra — Limit of Vegetation

The growth of large trees in Tundra is mainly hindered by— Extreme cold, Short growing season, Permafrost, Limited nutrients. Therefore, here— Mosses + Lichens + Small shrubs are dominant.

17. Natural Vegetation and Fire

In some grassland and savanna ecosystems, natural fire can be a part of the ecology. Fire— Removes dry grass; Recycles some nutrients; Can play a role in the regeneration of some plants; Can affect the balance between trees and grass. But too much or repeated human-induced fire can also harm the ecology.

18. Natural Vegetation and Biodiversity

The reason for generally extremely high biodiversity in tropical rainforests is—

  • Favourable temperature throughout the year
  • Adequate water
  • Long growing season
  • Diverse micro-habitats
  • Multi-layered forest structure

Major Regions: Amazon + Congo + Southeast Asia.

19. Altitude/Latitude Relationship of Biodiversity

Generally— Near the equator → More biodiversity. And in many mountainous regions— With increasing altitude, the species structure changes. But this should not be treated as a rigid universal rule; local environmental conditions are important.

21. Why Different Vegetation at the Same Latitude?

This is a very good conceptual question for RPSC. Vegetation can be different in two places located at the same latitude because—

  • Distance from the sea is different
  • Ocean currents are different
  • Position of mountains is different
  • Rainfall is different
  • Soil is different
  • Altitude is different
  • Wind systems are different

22. Effect of Ocean Currents on Natural Vegetation

Warm ocean currents can affect temperature and humidity in coastal areas. Cold currents in many regions can be associated with— Atmospheric stability, Low rainfall, Coastal aridity.

Illustrative Relationship: Western coast + Cold ocean current + Subtropical region → Possibility of coastal aridity.

23. Mountains and Rain Shadow

When moist winds strike a mountain, more rainfall can occur on the windward slope. On the other hand, the leeward slope of the mountain can be relatively dry. This is called the rain shadow effect.

Result: There can be a big difference in natural vegetation on the two sides of the same mountain system.

24. Natural Vegetation and Human Intervention

Natural vegetation is originally determined by natural conditions, but in modern times human activities have greatly affected its distribution.

Main Reasons: Agricultural expansion, Deforestation, Urbanisation, Mining, Road/Dam construction, Overgrazing, Forest fire, Invasive species, Climate change.

25. Forest Destruction and Natural Vegetation

Major Effects of Deforestation:

  • Reduction in biodiversity
  • Habitat fragmentation
  • Soil erosion
  • Change in water cycle
  • Reduction in carbon storage
  • Impact on local/regional climate

26. Natural Vegetation and Carbon

Forest ecosystems store carbon— In biomass, In soil, In dead organic matter. Therefore, the conservation of large forests is also linked to climate change mitigation.

27. How to Link 2025–26 Current Affairs

A recent event related to any natural vegetation region should be linked under that same region.

Examples:

Amazon → Deforestation → Fire → Biodiversity → Carbon cycle → Climate impact

Congo Basin → Forest conservation → Biodiversity → Carbon storage

Tundra → Permafrost → Temperature increase → Possible change in vegetation limit

Savanna → Drought → Forest fire → Grassland-forest balance

In this way, current affairs should not be studied separately from the related natural vegetation.
